An Exploratory Study on Factors Related to Depression and Symptom Distress of Cancer Patients

Abstract

This study has been done for the purpose of identifying factors that are. related to the symptom distress and experienced among cancer patients in order to enhance understanding of their suffering, thus, help them cope with the condition more effectively. Variables examined for this exploratory study included the patients¢¥ perception of support given by family and professional health team members, patients¢¥ awareness of diagnosis, sites of cancer, and sociodemographic characteristics of patients.
The sample chosen for this study was 110 cancer patients including both ambulatory patients and hospitalized patients at Seoul National University Hospital during the period from July 27 to October 5, 1986.
Tools utilized for measurement for the study were:
(a) Modified Symptom Distress Scale; (b) Zung¢¥s Self-rating Depression Scale; and (c) family and professional health team support scale modified by Kang.
Findings;
1. The higher the level of perceived family and professional health team support, the lower was the level of symptom distress.
2. The higher the level of perceived family and professional health team support, the lower was the level of depression.
3. There was no significant difference in depression between the patients with awareness
of their diagnosis and the patients without awareness.
4. No significant difference was found in the level of symptom distress by the sites of cancer.
5. The level of symptom distress was significantly higher at post anti-cancer therapy period than prior to the begining of the therapy.
6. Socio-demographic characteristics significantly influencing the level of depression were sex,
education and economic dependency. How-ever, no significant relationship was found between socio-demographic characteristics and the level of symptom distress.
7. An examination through subdivision by characteristics of symptom distress revealed significant relationship between the sites of cancer and respiratory distress, and a significant difference in emotional and digestive distress between pre and post anti-cancer therapy period.
